Europe has always been a home to some of the best eSports organization in the world. However, in the last four of five years, more and more teams from Eastern Europe are appearing in the eSports scene. Natus Vincere and Virtus.pro are already established eSports organizations that achieved great success in their competitions. On the other hand, there are those teams that are still struggling to achieve their first big result. And one of them is Vega Squadron.
Even though this organization host teams in several eSports competitions including Hearthstone, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, League of Legends, and Starcraft II, there is not a lot of people who have heard about this organization. Up to this point, their most successful team was the one competing in Starcraft II competitions. But lately their Dota 2 team has been showing great improvements.
Vega Squadron History
Vega Squadron as an organization was established back in 2012 with the headquarters in Moscow, Russia. However, with the expansion of Dota 2 and the rise of popularity of that competition, Vega Squadron decided to launch their own Dota 2 team in October 2014. At that time, their original Dota 2 team featured Artem ‘Sharfik’ Marzavin, Andrey ‘The_apathy’ Aleskov, Unstopp, Dmitry ‘ShkeepeR’ Belaykov, and CaptainLove.
However, these players didn’t stay a long time in the team. In November same year, Vega Squadron officials announced that they have released their entire original Dota 2 roster. Besides that, the officials also announced that they had signed the entire roster of BUHLO-UroPb as their new Dota 2 team. At that time, this was a huge surprise. Rarely any eSports organizations decide to release their entire roster after only a month.
Just a couple of days before 2016, Vega Squadron announced that they were making another change in their roster. This time Ilia ‘Stalianer’ Drugov left the team while Dmitry ‘UnderShock’ Bolshakov joined their Dota 2 team. However, he left the team in February of 2016. The results that Vega Squadron had during 2015 were completely overshadowed by their constant changes in the roster. There was hardly a month in which Vega did not announce the departure or arrival of certain players.
Even with their endlessly changing roster, they were one of the few teams in the world who participated in The International 5 and did not make any changes in the team immediately after the end of the International. Despite that, due to constant roster changes, Vega Squadron was not able to achieve any serious results. Rarely any team who went through similar things as Vega was able to find the consistency with their results. Looking from this point of view, that lack of consistency has cost a lot to this eSports organization.
To this day, many are still claiming that Vega Squadron had a huge potential for achieving high levels in Dota 2 competitions. But the lack of stability has made this team become mediocre at best. Vega Squadron still has time to change their policies and start creating more permanent team. That will provide them with the opportunity to achieve success that many of them are currently stopped believing.
Back in the days when Vega Squadron was launching their Dota 2 team they participated in several minor Dota 2 tournaments. They even managed to win GG League Season 2 in 2014. Considering that their Dota 2 team was launched in October 2014, they did not participate in many tournaments that year.
However, that changed in 2015 when they were playing many more tournaments in which they won several titles. Those were tournaments such as Mountain Tail Challenger, Esports Dota 2 League Open Tournament 4, as well as Yard G2A Fest Ep.1 and Hitbox EU Championship #2. Besides them they also managed to win several monthly minor competitions such as EIZO Cup #14, MSI Dragon Battle #1, and GIGABYTE Challenge #12.
In October 2015, Vega Squadron achieved their biggest result up to this point. After taking the first place in the qualifiers for the ESL One New York, Vega Squadron managed to keep that good form into the main event of the tournament. To the surprise of many who attended the competition, Vega Squadron found themselves in the grand finals facing Team Secret. Vega Squadron could not allow that opportunity to slip away from them. So they put everything into the final match and eventually managed to win the title at that tournament.
Besides that success, they also participated in The International but they were eliminated in the Wild Card competition. In 2016 they managed to win several first places in the qualifiers for the big tournaments. But they were not able to continue with that good game in the main event. That year, they finished in the second place at the Global Grand Masters. The same at the FACEIT Invitational as well as at the WePlay Dota 2 League Season 3.
Vega Squadron opened 2017 by winning another title at the Royal Arena #2. It was their best result so far this year. When it comes to major Dota 2 tournaments this year, Vega Squadron has finished in the 6th place at the Mr.Cat Invitational Europe, 5-6th at the StarLadder i-League Invitational, and in the fourth place at the DreamLeague Season 7 that was played less than a month ago.
After more than three years of making big changes in their roster, it seems that Vega Squadron has finally found more or less stable and permanent lineup for their Dota 2 team. Currently, their Dota 2 team features Semion ‘CemaTheSlayeR’ Krivulya, Sergey ‘G’ Bragin, Illya ‘ALOHADANCE’ Korobkin, Airat ‘Silent’ Gaziev, and Vasily ‘AfterLife’ Shishkin.
Interestingly, all the players from their current lineup except CemaTheSlayeR joined this team in April this year. Unlike all other members of the team, CemaTheSlayeR joined the team back in November of 2014. And he remained in the team ever since. Because of that, they became the biggest consistency in the team. But the question is how long he will still be able to carry the team on his back.
This lineup has failed to secure their spot in The International 7 which was huge disappointment for their fans and for the team. Everyone expected that they could finally reach the main event of the biggest Dota 2 tournament in the world. The potential is there but the team will have to find a way of how to use that potential to improve their results in the upcoming period.
Total Prize Money Won
In general, Vega Squadron as an organization has won $559,097. It is not that much for an organization present in the world of eSports for almost five years. However, more than 80 percent of that amount, $450,360 to be precise, are the earnings of their Dota 2 team. It indicates that their other divisions are not that successful.
Considering that Semion ‘CemaTheSlayeR’ Krivulya has been the member of their Dota 2 team from the very beginning, it is no wonder that he is the player that won the highest amount of prize pool money in Vega Squadron – $90,051. Just like it is the case with almost all eSports teams in the world. They, too, have certain sponsorship deals which currently include Esports.bet, DXRacer, MSI, and several others.
