Last year, one of the NBA franchises that recognized the importance and the potential of eSports industry, the Philadelphia 76ers bought an eSports team, Team Dignitas. However, 76ers did not stop there. A couple of days ago they announced that they had acquired an all-female eSports Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team from Selfless Gaming. The team has been lead by Emmalee ‘Emuhleet’ Garrido who has been the team’s captain for some time now.
According to the announcement from the 76ers and the team, Team Dignitas first appearance will be at the IEM Katowice tournament that will be held this week. Besides that, it was announced that this team will also be participating at the Fragadelphia 11 tournament that will be held in June in Philadelphia.
So far, Team Dignitas has been solid at the tournaments in which they participated. For example, they won the title at the 2015 Copenhagen Games Female Tournament as well as they managed to finish in top eight at Fragedelphia 9 tournament that was held two years ago.
The fact that Philadelphia 76ers have bought Team Dignitas is just one step in the trend of professional sports teams buying eSports teams and entering the eSports industry. Besides 76ers, Miami Heat also acquired an eSports team and they will also participate at the eSports tournaments. However, basketball teams are not the only entering the eSports industry, individual football players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gerard Pique have also invested in an eSports teams which indicate that the eSports industry is growing with every single day.
