Without a doubt, Brandon ‘Seagull’ Larned is the most popular Overwatch player in the world and the recent news about him and his team, NRG, have surprised many in the world of eSports. Seagull has announced that he will be stepping down from NRG Overwatch team, but it seems that he will not be saying a permanent goodbye to playing Overwatch. Even though many fans of NRG and Overwatch in general have been shocked by this news, the fact that he will remain in the Overwatch scene brought some peace to those fans.
Seagull stepping down
It was announced that Seagull will be stepping down from the main NRG roster in order to focus more on streaming of content. However, even though he will not be playing for NRG anymore he will remain as their substitute player, and he will do his best to help the team in times of need. Besides that, Seagull will remain under the NRG flag even when he starts streaming more. The player that will be replacing Seagull in NRG for the upcoming Overwatch Monthly Melee will be Lucas ‘Mendokusaii’ Hakansson who previously played for Cloud09 as a DPS player. Over the last couple of days rumours about NRG being the second team that will receive the direct invitation for OGN Overwatch APEX have appeared. If those rumours get confirmed the question remains whether Mendokusaii will be still playing for NRG at that tournament as well.
Seagull’s official statement on Twitter stated that it is becoming difficult for him to maintain his professional career and his career as a streamer. The player said that when he originally made a breakthrough on Twitch he was determined to keep playing as a professional but this has changed. This, because he now believes his streaming hours are not worth spending on playing competitive Overwatch and that playing in small online tournaments was certainly not worth letting his Twitch fans down.
Only a temporary decision
However, it seems that this will be just a temporary move because according to the reports, Seagull is planning to fully return for the first season of the Overwatch League. In the last couple of months, NRG Overwatch team had some serious problems with the results. All that culminated in changing the roster of the team and eventually, Seagull, Alex ‘Ajax’ Johnson, Seb ‘numlocked’ Barton, Anthony ‘barnleu’ Ballo, Tim ‘Dummy’ Olson, and Andre ‘ iddqd’ Dahlstrom joined the team in an effort to bring this team back to the glory days.
Not only that NRG had bad results in the last couple of months, but they also did not play even a single Overwatch match in the last month or so. Because of that many players have expressed their discomfort with NRG potentially receiving the invitation for OGN Overwatch APEX Season 3 stating that that is not fair towards other teams that are doing their best in many competitions. There are several questions have not been answered yet about NRG, Mendokusaii’s future in the team, Seagull’s return and others and we hope that the things will get clarified in the upcoming period.
