University LoL league has been organized for several years now and in those years teams and players had the opportunity to earn certain amounts after the initial stages of the league. Currently, each player of the winning team of the regional competition will have the opportunity to win the $8,000 scholarship, while the runners ups will end up with the $4,000 scholarship. In September 2016, Riot announced that there will be some changes for the upcoming season and at that moment they announced the new regional brackets and they confirmed the rules for the previously mentioned scholarships.
Prize Pool Controversy
However, the biggest controversy and the biggest protest came after the announcement that players and teams will no longer have the opportunity to win the championship prizes because they were eliminated by Riot. While the last year winning team from the University of British Columbia won $30,000 for the win and while each player from the Robert Morris University won $15,000 dollars for finishing second, this season will be different because those kinds of prize pools will no longer be available and the competition will no longer feature that kind of prize pool. The Riot’s announcement did not clarify many things but what can be concluded from their announcement is the fact that they have shifted the prize onto the regional competition in order to, in their words, to provide opportunity for more teams to win scholarships. Immediately after the announcement there was an outcry from the gaming community participating in the uLoL league mostly focusing on the introduction of new rules without any previous indication or announcement.
