It seems that eSports is going to yet another new level with the Overwatch League according to Activision Blizzard, the company behind the successful game. While the company has been keeping silent about many of their plans in store for this league. They are seemingly trying to achieve something that hasn’t been seen before in this space.
Leaders in the world of eSports involved in eSports since the beginning say that this is the most ambitious thing that has ever been tried. It aims to pull the entire world of eSports forward with it. And they aim to have Activision Blizzard leading the charge.
This is some of what Mike Sepso from Activision Blizzard had to say on the matter at the recent Gamelab Conference that took place in Barcelona, Spain. Sepso was the person who founded MLG which was the leader of eSports in the beginning. Actually it was the massive developer Activision Blizzard that acquired it back in January of 2016.
He believes that what is most important right now in the industry. Something that will stay important for the foreseeable future is that the publishers and studios have been fully embracing everything to do with the world of eSports.
He believes that nobody in the world is going to be dismissing the power of eSports for any longer.
People still see news stories of television networks covering eSports as being significant. But things are going to a whole new level and it may shock the world. Sepso does not believe that eSports is live traditional sport such as basketball and football. And that it does not necessarily need to be on the television networks in order to be successful.
The main demographic of the people who are watching eSports do not really consume television and may not even own one. This is the age of streaming on demand services. The internet is at the forefront of all media consumption for the majority of those in the demographic.
Streaming sites such as Twitch are where millions spend their spare time consuming stream of different eSports and casual gamers. Traditional television is dying and they probably need this demographic more than eSports needs the networks. They are trying to stay relevant and are trying anything attracts this younger generation to their networks.
It is also an exciting time as traditional worldwide renowned brands are now getting on board when it comes to sponsorship. Up until now the majority of sponsors came from companies that traditionally were involved with the video games industry. They are now realizing that people are no longer reading television commercials and are moving to alternative methods of advertising. This is all good for Activision Blizzard and eSports as a whole. It helps to further increase the worldwide presence and scope of the industry.
It is certainly a project that they keep tightly under wraps. But when they finally reveal it will be an exciting time for anyone who has an interest in the industry as a whole.
